1994
In October of 1994 in South Carolina, a woman named Susan Smith garnered national sympathy by appearing on television claiming that her two children, Michael and Alex, had been kidnapped. She later remorsefully confessed that she had drowned her own sons. The boys were found by police strapped into the seats of Ms. Smith's car in the nearby John D. Long Lake under 18 feet of water. Tom Findlay, Ms. Smith's former boyfriend, disclosed that he had written to Ms. Smith a few days before the boys were murdered, stating that her children were one of the reasons their relationship would not continue. Susan Smith is currently serving a term of life in prison. Time Magazine referred to Ms. Smith as 'a modern day Llorona.' |
